Metallic & Decorative Floor Coatings
When the floor is meant to be looked at rather than merely survived, the finish system matters as much as the protection under it.
Finish Options
Decorative flake (chip) systems. Vinyl flakes broadcast into the wet base coat, sealed under a clear topcoat. The most popular garage finish by a wide margin: it hides minor slab imperfections, adds slip resistance through texture, and comes in blends matched to a home's palette. Durable and cost-effective.
Quartz systems. Colored quartz aggregate instead of vinyl flake. Heavier, more textured, considerably more slip-resistant and more durable. Common in commercial applications and high-traffic residential spaces.
Metallic epoxy. A pigmented metallic base manipulated during application to produce depth, movement, and marble-like or reflective effects. Every floor is genuinely one-off — the pattern can't be repeated exactly. This is the premium finish, most often specified for showrooms, retail, and high-end garages.
Solid color. Clean, uniform, most economical, and fully protective. The aesthetic is simply simpler.
Choosing Between Them
Slip resistance increases with surface texture, so flake and quartz outperform smooth metallic and solid systems anywhere water is present. Hiding slab imperfections also favors flake and quartz. Metallic delivers the most visual impact but shows dust and fine scratches more readily.
One local note: in a dry inland climate, fine dust settles constantly. A high-gloss metallic floor in a working garage will show it. For a showroom or a finished space that gets cleaned regularly, it's stunning. For a garage that stays open half the day, flake is usually the more practical choice.
